  • About this location :

    Binissalem in the centre of the island of Mallorca, is also the centre of wine production on the island of Mallorca Wine has been grown in Mallorca since the Roman occupation in 121 BC. Binissalem was one of the original sites where wine was cultivated and the quality of Mallorcan wines was so renowned it was even mentioned by famed philosopher and scientist ‘Pliny the Elder’. Wine production then survived the occupation of the more temperate Moors but was later wiped out by a plague of the Phylloxera virus in the 19th century. Binissalem adapted to this by planting almond trees and exporting farm equipment to countries, such as France. Wine production began again in the late 19th century and Binissalem was the first area to be awarded a DO (Denominacion de Origen) in 1991. Along with neighbouring towns such as Santa Maria, Santa Eugenia and Alaro, Binissalem is today the focal point for the revival of fine Mallorcan wine production. The village also has traditions of fine woodwork stonework and shoe making, its stone architecture and large plaza and easy transport links to all areas of the island make it an extremely popular town. Its Friday morning market and music and dancing during summer nights in the main plaza entice visits from both tourists and locals throughout the year.
