The fortified village dates from the 1300 James the II of Aragon ordered the construction of a watchtower and castle to guard the coast. The municipality has a group of small hamlets in the surrounding hills and larger communities in the coves and bays of the municipalities coastline all of which are summer destinations, Cala Lliteres, Canyamel, Font de sa Cala, Son Moll, sa Pedruscada, es Provençales, es Carregador, Cala Mesquida and Cala Gat.
